India Weather Alert: Heavy Rain, Thunderstorms and Heatwave Conditions to Impact Travel

Latest Lifestyle News: Those planning holidays, business trips or pilgrimage journeys this week may have to redo their schedules due to a severe weather alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) which covers hill stations, plains, coastal belts and northeastern regions. In the case of landslides in routes to the Himalayan and poor weather conditions in routes along the southern coasts, weather disturbances are likely to affect air travel, movement of rail and road transport in various states.

The new IMD bulletin points out an uncommon confluence of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, hailstorms, gusty winds and above normal heatwave conditions across the nation. Whereas North India is preparing with the western disturbance induced storms, eastern and northeastern states are on high alert of the rain drops. At the same time, some western and central Indian regions are still struggling to deal with the extreme heat during the day.

Hill Stations and Northern Routes Possible to have Delays

In the coming few days, there are likely to be intermittent rains, lightning and road slipperyness in popular mountain destinations in Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Sikkim. Officials have warned that unexpected landslides, falling debris and low visibility can cause tourist traffic to be disrupted, particularly on winding highways and high-altitude passes.

Thunderstorms with strong winds are also likely to occur in Delhi, Punjab, Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh due to the presence of an active western disturbance. Indeed, IMD has already sounded an alert, including red and orange, in regions of the NCR area of a severe thunderstorm and hailstorm with wind moving up to 80 kmph.

Passengers who use road to hill shrines, summer camps or weekend resorts are being advised to check the local advisories before travelling.

Alarm raised as rain and rough seas compound the situation in Coastal States

The extreme weather conditions are not exclusive to the north. Southern coast states such as Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka are likely to experience heavy showers, thunderstorms and humid gusty winds. A number of beach resorts will experience the rough sea conditions, and ferry transportation, boating and water sports will be unsafe.

Already Kerala has been placed under heavy rain watch up to May 9, with Andhra Pradesh coastal belt likely to experience lightning and wind speeds ranging between 30 to 50 kmph.

Tour operators explain that travellers planning their coastal holidays need to have back-up plans, which are indoor-based activities, as beach activities may still be limited.

What Travelers Can Expect this Week

According to the all-India weather advisory, both local tourists and daily commuters can face unexpected hassles with transport and outdoor movement.

The most important Travel Concerns to remember:

  • Flight delays due to thunderstorms and low visibility
  • Flood rescheduling of trains in eastern corridors prone to flooding.
  • Obstacles in hilly areas due to landslides.
  • Risk of heat exhaustion in Rajasthan, Gujarat and central India.
  • Temporarily closing beaches and marine activities.
  • More traffic congestion during rain spells in the urban areas.

According to experts, weather responsive travel planning is already taking part in modern lifestyle choices, particularly in the transition months when extreme climate swings are more prevalent.

Heavy rainfall spell to befall Northeast and East India

Some of the states that are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall over a number of days include Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Tripura and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal. The IMD has cautioned that movement in these areas might be disrupted by local flooding, waterlogging, delayed train services and airport congestion.

Close monitoring is underway in Bagdogra, Guwahati, Silchar and Dibrugarh sectors with airlines and transport agencies preparing to deal with the potential effect of operation delays.

Still heatwaves continue in Western and Central India

Although rain is falling on many areas in India, the western states of India including Rajasthan and Gujarat, and some parts of Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha remain under heatwave stress. This unusual mix of weather events and rising temperatures has warned the meteorologists that this unusual combination of weather events and rise in temperatures can cause rapid weather changes within an hour and make long distance road travel physically draining.

The travellers are encouraged to make hydration necessities, regularly observe weather applications and not to travel to the heatwave area late afternoons along the highway.

Travel Advisory Nationwide: Flexible Plans are the Smartest Choice

As India experiences a full spectrum weather warning, hills to coasts, the next few days may challenge the patience of tourists, pilgrims and business passengers alike. As one heads to Himalayan retreats, northeastern circuits, metro cities or southern beaches, it will be weather uncertainty that will be decisive.

Experts indicate that flexible booking, buffer travel time, real-time IMD updates will be critical as extreme weather conditions are expected to continue to be experienced in the country this week.
