CBSE Class 12 Evaluation Crisis: Is the OSM System Devastating Futures?
Latest Education News: This is a tumultuous change in the academic system as students from all over the country have voiced their strong discontent over the CBSE Class 12 Examination System. The CBSE’s On-Screen Marking (OSM) system is at the center of this unrest, as it has changed the robust academic evaluation process into a high-stakes lottery for students and many teachers. For thousands of pupils, the gap between their expectations and the marks they have achieved has broken their faith in the fairness of the national examination board, and left their future academic prospects hanging.

The disillusionment is due to the fact that marks are not allocated equally and transparently to an answer containing multiple components which is subjective in nature under the CBSE exams using the digital assessment software. Students say that hurriedness to meet tight deadlines under the digital system has resulted in “mechanical grading” and “gross inaccuracies. Rupee vs. Dreams What a sentiment that is, as students are questioning the CBSE’s use of a faulty technological interface and the hard work they put in over the years in the name of education has been thrown down the drain.
The Flaws of the On-Screen Marking System
The main dispute is that of the switch from manual (pen and paper) evaluation to centralized (OSM) evaluation of the CBSE, which was once touted as providing efficiency and transparency to the CBSE. But the reality for the students is very different, students say. There are several questions that critics raise:
- Non-uniformity of marking: Many answer papers are getting very different marks for the same answers, indicating that there is no uniformity in marking by the CBSE graders who are facing digital queues.
- Technical Glitches: The students of CBSE have faced huge deductions due to reports of missing pages, unrendered diagrams and errors in the digital scanning process.
- The ‘Lottery’ Effect: Each page can be answered in a split second, so the nuances of the descriptive response are often overlooked and the final grade appears arbitrary, and not based on knowledge.
- Limited Recourse: The process of re-evaluation and verification conducted by the CBSE is proving to be extremely expensive and practically ineffective for students with severe anomalies in their original digital entries, since these are rarely altered.
The Impact on Higher Education and Admissions
These misreadings have far-reaching repercussions beyond the report card. A student’s percentage is critical and will matter more and more if college admissions become more competitive. Many of the well-performing students now find themselves unable to secure admission in their preferred courses at the premier universities of the country on account of a sudden drop in scores. Many of the high scorers have been unable to secure admission to their desired courses in the premier universities of the country as their scores have dropped suddenly and without any reason. The psychological impact is far from negligible: many students feel that their career paths have been changed not because of their academic performance, but because of an “invisible” algorithm.
The Rise of Private Support Systems
Many families are beginning to seek out private options for security due to the weakening of the confidence in the official evaluation process. Coaching Institutes in India have received an increased number of queries about what could have gone wrong with the students who are desperately looking to know what they are missing or are trying to find out other ways to achieve their success in life, such as entrance exams or bridge courses. The institutes are now functioning as de facto counselors, filling a vacuum of a board that is felt to be inaccessible and unmindful of student complaints. These private institutions provide assistance but also show that there is a huge gap in education between those who are ready to invest more money to be supported and those who are left to struggle after a poor grade in CBSE exams.
Calls for Transparency and Accountability
Student activists are demanding a complete overhaul of examination wing in response to the growing pressure. They are not just requesting re-marking but a complete audit of the OSM system. Their demands include that students should be allowed to see their digitized answer sheets without the current exorbitant fee, they should be required to have a second review of any significant difference in their marks and that they should be given an independent grievance redressal committee to which they can appeal, made up of academic experts, not just administrative officials. If nothing changes, the rift between the CBSE and the students’ community will only grow larger and larger, and may result in greater disillusionment with the country’s national assessment system over the years.
