Shubman Gill’s hopes of returning to India’s T20 squad have hit a roadblock. Despite a sudden opening caused by Tilak Varma’s injury, the national selectors are reportedly not interested in bringing the 26-year-old back into the shortest format.

The situation for India changed quickly this week. Tilak Varma, a mainstay in the T20 middle order, underwent emergency surgery for testicular torsion in Rajkot on Wednesday. The surgery was successful, but the recovery timeline is a blow for the team. He is expected to miss the upcoming five-match T20I series against New Zealand and is now a major doubt for the T20 World Cup starting next month.

Usually, an injury to a top-order player would open the door for a high-profile name like Gill. However, reports suggest the selection committee wants to stick to their current plan.

The primary reason is surprisingly practical: optics. Since Gill is the established captain of India’s Test and ODI teams, selectors feel it would be “odd” to have him in the T20 squad if he isn’t a guaranteed starter. They are reportedly reluctant to have a player of his stature warming the bench or carrying drinks for the playing XI.

There is also a concern about what happens if Varma recovers mid-series. If Gill is brought in and then has to make way for a returning Varma, it could create an awkward environment for the senior player.

Instead of turning to Gill, the management is looking at other options. Riyan Parag has emerged as a potential replacement, though he is currently nursing a shoulder injury. This shift signals a clear intent from the BCCI to move in a different direction for T20Is, focusing on specialized roles rather than reputation.

Gill was previously the vice-captain of the T20 side but was dropped for the mega event in a bold call by the committee. While he remains a central figure in other formats, his path back to the T20I roster looks increasingly difficult.

For now, the focus remains on Tilak Varma’s recovery, as India races against time to finalize its squad for the World Cup.
