Why Your Next Smartphone and TV Will Cost More in 2026

Business News Today: This year in India, upgrading a phone or buying a new smart TV is likely to cost more. The price of electronic items will rise once more. That brief period of stable pricing is over. All over India, the cost of gadgets in the retail networks and digital platforms has started showing a sharp trend in the upward direction. According to experts, this is not some temporary phase.

The “price of materials”—the total cost of all parts used to manufacture a product—is climbing high. As predicted by the industry reports, prices for top electronics would see an increase of 10% to 20% by the middle of 2026.

The AI “Tax”: A Battle for Memory

The primary factor behind this price hike is not a new government tax. Actually, it’s the global explosion of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Generative AI models, such as those owned by OpenAI and Google, demand massive data centers for operation. Further, these data centers use a particular, high-end type of memory called High-Bandwidth Memory (HBM).

Samsung, Micron, and SK Hynix are the major chipmakers. More than 90% of the RAM market in the world falls under the control of these tech giants. Since AI companies have no issue in paying more for a premium material, manufacturers have turned their focus to these high-margin AI chips. Standard memory used in your everyday laptop or phone is not much of their top interest right now.

The market sees a shortage of “legacy” chips. The equation relating short supply and high demand equates to skyrocketing prices. The last few months have reported tripled cost for DDR4 RAM in some markets. This has left no choice for manufacturers but to push this inflation onto you, customers.

The Shrinking Value of the Rupee

Although the worldwide chip shortage has been a major force, currency fluctuations are presenting an even bigger challenge to Indian consumers. In the first part of 2026, the Indian Rupee has been depreciating steadily against the United States Dollar.

Since most of the high-tech products are measured and traded in dollars, the depreciated rupee compels Indian firms to spend more on the same parts. Even the goods that are produced in India often use imported sub-assemblies, like display panels, camera modules, and advanced sensors. Retailers have noted that every downward slump in the rupee increases the landed price of these imports, and the net effect is that there is a covert price increase where the discounts are lost, and there is a gradual increment in the base prices.

“Spec Cuts”: The New Reality for Budget Buyers

The effect of these increasing prices is felt most in the low-end segment, namely smartphones and laptops that are sold below 20, 000 and 50, 000 respectively. Profit margins in these categories are already pathetic.

A number of manufacturers use what is known as specification downgrades to avoid the prices breaking the psychological barrier beyond which it will no longer be profitable. Customers can see new designs with 8GB of RAM rather than the exclusive 12GB that typified the older versions, or companies can use older, somewhat underperforming, faster processors to reduce expenses.

As it is observed by a retail analyst, the trend is that brands are faced with the choice of either a significant price increment or a small reduction in performance. To the consumer, this will mean that the consumer’s buying power will be lower after two years than it was two years ago.

Logistics and the “Rat Effect”

In addition to shortages of semiconductors, the price of goods transportation is increasing as well. Shipment and freight costs have been fluctuating as a result of transport issues (regionally) and labour deficits within major ports.

Also, there is a hidden environmental side effect that has emerged. According to experts, the prices of protection against pests, especially rodents, in warehouses, have been on the rise due to the changing of urban waste management and the environment surrounding the streets. The shrinkage experienced due to the contamination of the components when storing the goods, although seemingly a minor issue, gives the distributors another overhead burden that escalates the retail price even more.

Should You Buy Now or Wait?

The future of the rest of 2026 is not very bright. As the major players in the industry, like Dell and Asus already declared the strategic price changes, the days of cheap and available memory seem to be long gone in the short run.

The recommendation provided by the retailers is to consider taking advantage of a good offer that arises in case there is a clearance sale. The standard price cuts that are expected by the consumers after launch will hardly be realised this year. Rather than getting cheaper over time, a smartphone or a TV that one has today in their shopping cart could end up going up in price before the next festive season.
