Why CBSE Students Lose Marks Despite Correct Answers
Latest Education News: Every year, after the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) releases its results, a repetitive story is revealed among thousands of learners. Although they leave the examination hall feeling confident and having checked their answers with the textbooks, most people find out that they have a lower score than they would have expected. This gap is a source of frustration and confusion many times. But, a more detailed analysis of the assessment procedure shows that being able to solve correctly is only one of the elements of the equation in the CBSE system.

The Role of the Standardized Marking Scheme
This is mainly caused by the strict marking scheme as developed by the board as the main cause of the unexpected deductions of marks. CBSE offers a set of guidelines to evaluators of every paper. Such plans do not presuppose the ultimate solution but focus on the occurrence of specific keywords and technical terms.
In a subject like Science and Social Science, the student might be able to explain a certain concept in his own words and yet fail to use the actual terms used in the NCERT textbooks; he or she will stand to lose half or even a whole mark. The evaluators are conditioned to find these anchors to have consistency in the many answer sheets. Once a student goes too far out of the line of what is specified in the language, then the correctness of the answer is subjective because the score received is probably lower.
The Importance of Step-Marking
Students are more confident in mathematics and subjects based on numbers, but it is also in these fields that the marks are not only easily lost but also gained. CBSE follows a school policy of strict step-marking. In case a five-mark question is answered correctly based on the final answer, but the student does not take the intermediate steps or mention the formula he used to solve the question, the examiner will deduct marks.
Most high-performing students are likely to do mental calculations or omit what they perceive to be obvious in order to save time. To an evaluator, a step that has not been taken is a step that has not been taken in the logical sense. A student, therefore, who will give the correct answer but a shortcut solution will be awarded three out of five marks.
Misinterpreting Question Directives
The other severe education news in India is the inability to understand the command words that are found in the question paper. The words evaluate, describe, analyse, or enumerate require different forms of response. An example is when a question requires a student to critically analyse a historical event, and the student only provides the facts, he or she has not achieved the goal of the question.
Despite the fact that the answers are 100% accurate, the student will lose marks since the answer will not match the level of cognition required by the question. This lack of correspondence between request and content is a major mark loss activity in the humanities and languages.
Presentation and Word Limits
Although CBSE does not directly punish students with bad handwriting, legibility is psychologically evaluated as a factor. More to the point, too much overwriting or disorganization can lead to some points being missed by examiners. Moreover, it is a frequent error to neglect words.
The fact that a three-page essay was written on a four-mark question is not a guarantee of extra credit; actually, it is more likely to lead to a watering down of the main answer. Exceeding the word limit makes the students repeat themselves or even provide irrelevant information, which may anger an evaluator who has to go through a high number of copies within a given time.
