Uber to Launch Electric Air Taxis

Business News Today: The dream of driving over the overcrowded traffic in the cities is becoming a reality. Uber and Joby Aviation have partnered to launch electric air taxis to commuters. In the nearest future, instead of having to wait at a road with a stuffed traffic to have a vehicle, the passengers will be able to book a flight with the help of the same mobile application as the one used to order groceries. This partnership marks a significant change in the movement of people in cities.

High Speeds and Zero Emissions

Joby Aviation is a company that has designed an electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. It also does not need a runway as opposed to the traditional aircraft. It takes off like a helicopter and accelerates with wings like those of a fixed-wing airplane. This design facilitates it to work at an unusually quiet pace thus making it suitable to be used in residential and business areas without annoying people.

The aircraft are fast with a top speed of 322km/h (about 200mph). To provide an example, what used to take an hour of a person riding in gridlock can be shortened to only ten minutes of air travel. The pilot and four passengers are in the vehicle. Being fully electric, it produces no operating pollutants and is therefore a significantly cleaner option compared to traditional helicopters or gasoline-powered cars.

Booking Through the Uber App

One of the bonuses of this effort is the ease of use. The service will be featured directly in the Uber application and users will not have to visit a specific webpage or will not be required to contact a flight broker.

The process is designed to be smooth. When a destination is typed in, the application will determine the presence of a time-saving aerial taxi route. In case such exists, the app will offer a suggested itinerary that is multi-modal. It involves the vehicle picking up the passenger at his or her house and taking them to a Skyport; thereafter, the passenger is joined to the Joby aircraft. Once they have landed at the nearest Skyport to their ultimate destination, another Uber would be there to take them on the final leg. It is a door to door service which uses the air as a means of transport to avoid the busiest parts of the route.

Dubai Leading the Way

Dubai is likely to be one of the first cities to implement the service, even though the technology will be tested globally. Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has signed a contract to start air cab services as early as the end of 2024 or 2025.

The first plans of Dubai include four major vertiports, which are in strategic locations: Dubai International Airport, downtown Dubai, Dubai Marina, as well as Palm Jumeirah. The choice of these sites was as a result of the high congestion level and commuter delays. The air taxi service is a premium and time-saving option that will connect these hubs and make residents and visitors have another option.

Expansion to Other Global Cities

Dubai is not the sole focus. Joby and Uber are also considering the large metropolitan centers in the United States, that is, New York City and Los Angeles, which have among the worst traffic in the world.

The aim in New York is to connect Manhattan and major airports like JFK. Currently, the commute to the airport is now taking more than an hour in a car. A small electric air taxi would take about seven minutes to make the same trip. The firms are currently coordinating with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to confirm that all safety regulations have been met before the firms can deploy them publicly.

A Quiet Future for Urban Travel

The most important issues concerning airborne vehicles are safety and noise. Joby has spent years perfecting the technology of motors so that the aircraft can work with minimal audibility. When suspended in the air, it is designed to blend with the soundscape of the city.

With the development of battery technology, these flights are expected to be cheaper. Although the company has positioned itself as a premium service in the short term, the long-term goal is to make aerial ride sharing a service of everyday life. To many people, regaining the time wasted in traffic is a revolution that can not come fast enough.
