Five Indian Films Join for 2026 Oscar Best Picture
Latest Bollywood News: A wide range of Indian movies, such as Rishab Shetty’s *Kantara: Chapter 1* and Anupam Kher’s *Tanvi The Great*, have managed to meet the first qualification requirement in the 98th Academy Awards.

Freshly released by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is the so-called Reminder List, which lists 201 feature films that qualify as part of the nomination list of the economics category of Best Picture. Among these are five Indian productions that have passed the rigorous theatrical and inclusion standards necessary to qualify to compete in the 2026 Oscars.
The Contenders
The list includes diversified genres and languages. Top of the list is one of the most anticipated prequels to the 2022 hit Rishab Shetty, a film titled *Kantara: A Legend Chapter 1. Also accompanying it is Tanvi The Great, a directorial project by an experienced actor, Anupam Kher, to follow the story of a young girl with autism spectrum disorder.
The rest of the books to be considered include the multilingual animated film, Mahavatar Narsimha, inspired by Indian mythology, and the Tamil film, Tourist Family, the first directorial work of Abishan Jeevenith. The group is only complete with the one dark comedy, Sister Midnight, with Radhika Apte, a co-production between the United Kingdom and India.
How Eligibility Works
This list does not ensure nomination status. Instead, it proves that both films have been in compliance with the special rules of the Academy since 2025. A film needs to be in a ten-theater release in the United States and satisfy the standards of the Representation and Inclusion to be nominated for Best Picture.
Out of the 317 movies that qualify in all categories of the Oscar Award merely 201 have qualified to secure the prestigious Best Picture Award. These Indian movies are now competing in the same bracket as Hollywood blockbusters like the latest version of avatar movies, Fire and Ash, and the recent version of the Mission Impossible movie.
Bollywood News Today: What’s Next?
It is based on the success of Neeraj Ghaywan with his shortlisting in Best International Feature Film with his Neeraj Ghaywan in the film, Homebound. Although the competitors in the general categories were considered individually, the above five films were also submitted as the official submission in India.
The last nominations will be made on January 22, 2026. Given that any of these movies would make it to the final ten in the Best Picture category, it would be the latest entertainment news for Indian cinema. There will be the 98 th Academy Awards on March 15 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
