Rajpal Yadav’s Debt Crisis: Delhi High Court Proceedings

The current hearings in the Delhi High Court have made the personal problems of the actor come into the limelight once again.

The Origins of the Debt

Yadav had legal issues as early as 2010. Sometime during this time, the actor made a foray into filmmaking by becoming a director with Ata Pata Laapata. Yadav and his wife, Radha, borrowed a loan from Delhi-based businessman MG Agarwal of Murli Projects, in order to finance the project. Whereas the original principal was about five crore rupees, it had grown to nine crores over the years by way of accrued interest and penalties.

The actor also faced financial problems since the movie failed to do well at the box office. The cheques that Yadav Production House issued were dishonoured when the lenders asked to be paid. This triggered a legal action of several cases in Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act. The case went through various levels of the judiciary over a period of over one decade. Finally, as a form of punishment, Yadav was in custody on two occasions in 2013 and 2018.

Recent Court Proceedings

According to recent events in the Delhi High Court, the lawsuit is yet to be settled. In the recent bail hearings and live updates on the settlement of the debt, the court has restated that it has a strict stance on the recovery of the outstanding dues. Even though Yadav has indicated readiness to pay, time and access to money remain the key areas of disagreement.

The court has already observed that the actor has not respected some of the promises that were offered to the bench on the schedule of repayment. The legal experts who have been following the case note that the court can turn out to be more lenient on the celebrities who show goodwill to pay, but repetition of promise violations can lead to a tougher court action. It is alleged that the ongoing proceedings are aimed at establishing whether Yadav is able to produce a realistic proposal to release the pending 9 crore rupees.

Radha Yadav Breaks Her Silence

In the midst of the court case, the wife of Rajpal Yadav, Radha, has become his main support. She used a combination of pragmatism and gratitude in a recent interview with the media when discussing the circumstances in the family. Radha did not deny that the last several years have been extremely trying for their home, but she emphasized that they are not facing this challenge alone.

She denied the latest Bollywood news that the film industry had left them alone. Some members of the Bollywood fraternity have continued to be in touch and provided emotional support, as Radha admitted. She noted that the business aspect, as far as the money aspect, is confidential and, as such, is supposed to be dealt with in courts; the more human aspect of the business has been quite surprisingly kind. Radha appreciated the fact that people reached out to her and that these efforts had given the family the strength to keep on with the legal action.

A Friend’s Defense: “Intentions are Clean”

The story about Yadav is often split into those who believe that he was a defaulter and those who believe that he was a beleaguered artist. One of the old friends and close associates of the actor has recently come to the defense of the character of Yadav. He claimed that the actor did not have any intention of defrauding any of the parties.

The friend said in an interview that his intentions are all clean. He stated that the financial downfall of Yadav was due to a failed business venture and not a case of bad faith or misappropriation of funds.

The associate argued that Rajpal Yadav is working like a Trojan Horse, accepting a lot of acting jobs, so as to ensure that he pays back all the rupees to the lenders. The defence is based on the fact that Yadav is the victim of a bad investment and is in the process of doing everything possible to correct the situation.
