Why Modern Life Feels Like a Never-Ending Race

Latest Lifestyle News: In our modern world, many youths have become trapped in a cycle that can be described as less of living and more of high-stakes performance. Such a smooth shift has re-established personal development, traditionally a natural process, as an assortment of measurements that should be achieved within specific deadlines.

Life as a Linear Metric

Together, the society has ingrained the belief that progress needs to occur on a straight and upward path. From career achievements and salary scales to relationships and fitness goals, there is so much pressure to show steady growth. But human growth does not usually follow a straight path; it involves phases of trial, mistake, and renewal.

As soon as people expect the continuation of their life on an ever-upwards course, they stop perceiving it in the present and start handling it as a show. According to clinical psychologists, such a state of mind makes life a show. He or she does not follow a personally significant course but follows a uniform concept of success. This kind of endeavor maintains the nervous system in an elevated alertness and adrenaline-induced urgency. This condition robs one of the ability to take in success or even to be happy in personal gains, since one is already thinking of the next stage.

The Dopamine Reward Loop

One of the primary factors behind such behavior is the so-called hustle culture, which makes considerable use of the dopamine reward system in the brain. Each online recommendation, career boost, or any form of recognition by the community elicits a subtle chemical reaction. This creates an effect of a certain strong loop: the person works, gets checked, and the brain insists on the repetition of that particular action in order to receive the reward again.

In the long run, such a dynamic necessitates a dangerous identity change. Productivity makes self-worth completely contingent. The feeling of restlessness cannot be explained when a person is not actively engaged in doing anything. Eventually, exhaustion stops being a warning mechanism and becomes a background hum in our lives.

The Paradox of Choice and Digital Comparison

The abundance of choices in modern life is overwhelming. In career choices and other side activities, there are too many options to choose from, and it is overwhelming. This phenomenon is known as the paradox of choice in behavioral science. The increased choice does not necessarily provide people with a feeling of freedom, and in many cases, it only serves to increase anxiety and the fear of making a mistake.

Social media intensifies this anxiety on a large scale. Human brains were also developed to be functioning at smaller local communities where they had few reference points to make comparisons. Thousands of people are showcasing their highlight reels to us nowadays. We see promotions and holiday breaks, but we are denied the behind-the-scenes battles, debt, or disappointments.

As a result, there is a falsification of reality, and a small failure is irrevocably changed into a great failure. When the person falls, he/she does not see it as a simple moment of inconvenience but reform it as an individual story of lagging behind. They are already pre-emptively disappointed in later challenges, and this becomes a vicious cycle, where the fear of being left behind makes one not make true progress.
