The Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) has finally reacted to the mounting pressure on one of Bangladesh’s pacer Mustafizur Rahman. What started as a time scheduling problem of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has now become a major confrontational issue between the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the upcoming T20 World Cup.

This controversy started when the latest cricket news appeared about the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) being unsatisfied with the workload of Mustafizur. There was early speculation that the BCCI had offered the left-arm seamer a late return to the IPL so as to mollify the player as well as his franchise. However, the BCB was quick to deny the rumors and state that there was actually no such deal in place, and the interest of the national team comes first.

A Request for Change

Surprisingly, later in a twist of events, Bangladesh is reported to have sent another letter to the ICC asking to have its scheduled T20 World Cup matches shifted out of some of the venues. Although the BCB uses technical and logistical reasons, a lot of viewers see this as a strategic move to deal with the current friction between the board and the neighbouring cricket boards.

As per the cricket news today, the ICC is now placed in a difficult position. Such a late change of venue would be a logistical nightmare, and it would touch on the sale of tickets, the television deal, and security. In the event the ICC joins, it would create an example that other countries would use to insist on such changes in case of personal conflicts.

The Human Toll

With the administrative discussions, the captain of Bangladesh, Najmul Hossain Shanto, has talked openly of the tension in the locker room. He acknowledged that the players are getting exhausted by the ever-present noise and outside scandals.

It is hard to focus on the game, but that is what we are trying to do, and every Indian cricket news is about correspondences and board meetings, Shanto said at one press meeting. He stressed that even though the management is doing what it is doing to address the situation, the atmosphere of uncertainty that prevails is not ideal at all for a team that is about to play a tournament in different parts of the world.

BCCI’s Stance

To a great extent, BCCI has been keeping a policy of silence. The officials have made it clear that they do not interfere with internal decisions of the BCB and the tournament scheduling of the ICC. However, they incorporated the Mustafizur issue by observing that the involvement of a player in the IPL can never be without the No Objection Certificates (NOCs) issued by the home boards.

The most important issue regarding the T20 World Cup is whether the ICC will agree to the change of venue or not. Currently, the timetable is the same, though the relations between the boards are significantly poor. It remains the biggest question that needs to be answered by the Bangladesh enthusiasts, whether Mustafizur will be playing in his prime form or not at all.
