Former World Cup Winner Criticize Ayush Badoni’s ODI Selection

New Delhi, Latest Cricket News: Ayush Badoni’s unexpected selection in India’s ODI team has started a hot debate. Ayush Badoni

Badoni, considered a replacement for Washington Sundar who got injured, was not so impressive in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy and performed an average 36.47 in List A cricket. Still, his climb to the ODI squad recieved wild critiicizm from many including Srikkanth. He did not held back while sharing his thoughts on Youtube.

Srikkanth asked,

“Out of Axar, Badoni, Nitish Reddy and Gaikwad, which two must really be in the team? Badoni played at LSG and he was the mentor there. I don’t see any other reason. What else can it be? On what reason”.

His words hinted at favourtism and clearly targetted the Indian team’s head coach.

Srikkanth used a dramatic metaphor to express his anger and said,

“What kind of door is this? Bring two or three trucks, take them and go through and break the door.” What he meant was that securing a spot in the Indian cricket team is becoming immensely challenging for talented and deserving domestic players.

The Problem with “IPL-First” Selection

Lal’s frustration reaches on a ongoing furious debate around Indian cricket: the weightage distributed among the IPL against domestic tournaments. For years, the Ranji Trophy determined the path to final selection. Now, a few flashy innings in a televised T20 league seem to relieve more weight than a triple century in a first-class match.

“We are ruining the system,” Lal added.

“If you don’t reward the players who are performing in domestic cricket, why will they play it? You are telling them that only the two months of IPL matter. Badoni is a decent player, but is he ready for international cricket? I don’t think so. You are ignoring players who are much more seasoned and prepared for the pressure of playing for India.”

The anger in Lal’s voice reflects a sentiment shared by many fans on social media. Many believe that the “finisher” tag is being handed out too easily. While Badoni has potential, critics argue that he hasn’t yet dominated a season enough to warrant a spot in the national squad ahead of others.

Hints of Favouritism

Perhaps the most damaging part of the veteran’s critique was the hint of nepotism or “backing.” While he didn’t name specific individuals, he implied that certain players get “pushed” by people in power.

“Sometimes it feels like if you have the right backing, you get in,” he noted. This isn’t the first time the Indian selection committee has faced such allegations. Whenever a “surprise” pick happens, the shadows of franchise influence and player management firms often loom large.

Lal emphasized that the national cap should be the hardest thing to earn in the country. By giving it away to players who haven’t “earned their stripes,” the value of the jersey is diluted. He urged the selectors to be more transparent about why certain players are picked over others who have better statistics across all formats.

The Road Ahead for Badoni

Despite the noise, Ayush Badoni will likely travel with the team to New Zealand. The pressure on the young man will be immense. Every ball he faces will be scrutinized by fans and experts alike. If he fails, the selectors will face more heat. If he succeeds, he might just silence his critics, including Madan Lal.

The Indian team is currently in a transition phase, looking to build a squad for the next T20 World Cup. Experiments are expected, but as Madan Lal pointed out, experiments should still be based on logic and performance. For now, the “Badoni call-up” remains one of the most debated topics in Indian sports, serving as a reminder of the intense passion and high stakes surrounding the Men in Blue.
