New Zealand Won their First-ever ODI Series
Latest Cricket News, INDORE — New Zealand made its history by scoring 41 runs ahead of the third ODI in Indore. This victory was the first time when the New Zealand team won an ODI series on Indian soil. In spite of Virat Kohli recording his 54 th ODI century, the Indian team fails to sustain its lead over the New Zealand team. The centuries of Glenn Phillips and Daryl Mitchell were fatal to the hosts.

It was a hot Sunday afternoon at the Holkar stadium and the scene was so intriguing. Virat Kohli was standing tall and his bat was cutting the air with an accuracy that has been a hall mark of a generation of cricket. He scored his 54th ODI century, a landmark that solely gave a lot of credence to his legacy of the King of the Chase. However, when the last wicket was hit and the New Zealand players ran on the turf with celebrations, Kohli was spotted going back to the pavilion with a serious face.
Even with his brilliant 124 off 108 balls, India dropped 41 points short in the third ODI. This Indian cricket news was not just a lost game, it was a historical event in the sport. The underdogs on the sub-continent, New Zealand became the first country to win a bilateral series of ODI in India with a 21 margin.
The Black Caps Build a Fortress
The basis of the triumph of New Zealand was made in the early morning. After the decision to bat, the visitors had been placed in a very delicate situation, going down to 583. However, different fortunes came to the team when Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips scored 219 together in a fourth-wicket partnership.
Mitchell held the innings of the game, making 137 of his own and Phillips provided the power as he made 106 off only 88 deliveries. They destroyed the bowling attack of the Indians, and they made short or wide Punishments. Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana had broken the stand and New Zealand had gone to 337 -8. It was a mark upon which India had to tug off something dear.
The Lone Warrior
The pursuit of India was made with more of an anteroom than a vigorous step. Both Captain Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma were back in the hut in the first seven overs. India was left in shambles at 71-4, when Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul followed in quick succession. The mob, hither generally as deafening, was dumb.
Then came Kohli.
He did not just bat, he manoeuvred the innings. Kohli started the gradual rebuilding of the score with the help of young Nitish Kumar Reddy. Whenever the pressure increased, he turned the strike easily and he released his trademark cover drives. Kohli maintained the required run rate even when the partners left. He got a most unlikely friend in Harshit Rana who hit a spirited 52 to keep the hope alive.
Kohli scored his 124 which was a victory of determination including ten fours and three sixes. But, as the tail was in the air and the strain of the increasing run rate grew, he was finally run out at long-off by Daryl Mitchell. It was the occurrence that practically terminated the match–and the series–of India.
A Milestone in New Zealand Cricket
This is a milestone win for the Black Caps. New Zealand had nothing to show after seven consecutive series in India, a streak that had gone back in 1988. This victory comes after their historic 3-0 series of Tests in late 2024, which indicated a change of the tide of global cricket.
The interim captain Michael Bracewell, who also had a calf injury that forced him to leave the field early, credited his team effort. It is all about parts, he said after the match. We are just a little country confronting the world and it is a very special thing to do it here in India.
What’s Next for India?
To India, the defeat poses some of the challenging questions. Although one of the top cricket news today is that Kohli completed the series with 240 runs in his form, there is an increasing concern about the group failure of the top order. Captain Shubman Gill agreed that the team did not have the finishing touch and could hardly develop any meaningful partnerships around Kohli.
The teams will now turn to a five match T20I series which is a final tune-up to the T20 world cup starting in February. India will seek revenge but New Zealand will proceed to the shortest length with faith in their depth and an international trophy in their cabinet.
