North Korea’s Next Leader? The Rising Profile of Kim Ju Ae
Latest World News: The inner politics of the North Korean nation have been marked with extreme secrecy over the decades, and the political changes or transitions of the leaders have only happened when the reigning ruler dies and the successor takes over. The recent events in Pyongyang, though, indicate that this historical trend is not adhered to. The young daughter of Kim Jong Un, Kim Ju-Ae, has come out of the darkness of the First Family into the limelight of the propaganda machine of the state. This has led international observers and intelligence agencies to believe that she is grooming herself to be the next leader of the country because she always visits high-profile military events and state ceremonies.

The number of such engagements has been notably greater since she was publicly first seen in late 2022, when she was attending an intercontinental ballistic missile launch. The state media, which previously just called her the beloved daughter, has adopted a higher standing with titles like the respected daughter and, most recently, the Morning Star of Korea. Such language changes are not usually accidental in North Korean politics; they are usually an indication of a formal change of status that is aimed at developing a cult of personality around a future leader.
The Military Focus of the Successor
The setting in which Kim Ju Ae is shown is one of the most memorable things about her life as a public figure. The majority of her appearances are with her father in the military bases, missile test shows, and parades. According to recent world news today, this is an attempt to project her image as being part of the Baeckdu bloodline and nuclear deterrent of the country. The regime sends a message of continuity by bringing a child to the centre of the military displays, which means that the creation of the strategic weapons is a multi-generational affair that she will one day run.
During the recent banquets to mark the anniversary of the Korean People’s Army, Kim Ju-Ae was observed to be sitting at the head table, which is always the seat occupied by the supreme leader. She has photographed senior generals bowing to her, something that has never been heard of before, as far as a minor is concerned. This graphic indicates that the military has already been directed to accept her authority, irrespective of her age, which is estimated to be between 13.
Internal Rivalries and the “Game of Kims”
The emergence of Kim Ju-Ae has cast doubts on the role that the powerful younger sister of the leader, Kim Yo-Joong, will play in the future. Over the years, Kim Yo – jong was believed to be the second most influential figure in North Korea, with sensitive diplomatic portfolios and making aggressive declarations against South Korea and the United States. She has been the embodiment of the hard-line policies of the regime.
Nonetheless, when the focus moves to the daughter, the audience is checking on the indicators of tension. Some analysts have characterised this relationship as a Game of Kims, whereby the immediate family of Kim Jong is being favored above the rest of his brothers. Although Kim Yo-jong is still an important figure to the regime, Ju-Ae was promoted, which suggests that the succession strategy is also highly centered on the immediate family of the present leader. According to some reports on intelligence, the visibility of Kim Yo has been closely regulated in order to avoid the need to make her shadow the young heir.
Challenges to Female Leadership
Even though the state media hinted clearly that the election of a female leader would be the biggest change in the political culture of North Korea, which is significantly patriarchal. There has never been a woman as a leader of the country, and the ruling elite is controlled by older men. To address this, the regime seems to be using the “Baekdu bloodline” story, the idea that the Kim family is gifted by God with the authority to govern, to override the gender norms.
In case Kim Ju Ae is the successor, the regime has to confront the issue of ensuring stability in a long transition period. Kim Jong Un is relatively young, which means that Ju-Ae can be a successor in waiting for decades. This is a time that the regime has to play off her education, her image in front of the audience, and the loyalty of the top brass of the military.
