Anoushka And Rishabh

Sitarist and composer Anoushka Shankar, in an explicit clarification of the situation needed to have the integrity of her own family musical lineage upheld, has publicly rejected assertions by Rishabh Rikhiram that he is the last disciple of Pandit Ravi Shankar. The controversy underscores the profound cultural importance of the Guru-shishya (teacher-student) system of Indian classical music, where the status of a disciple has immense weight and certain formal duties.

Background of the Dispute

The scandal started when Rishabh Rikhiram, a musician and an instrument maker of the popular Rikhiram family, started to credit himself in promotional materials and interviews as the last pupil of the legendary Bharat Rikta awardee. These assertions implied an institutional connection of education that would place him in the line of Ravi Shankar’s established pupils.

Recently, Anoushka Shankar, the daughter who has long been preserving the legacy of her father and also running his archives, responded to such claims. She went as far as to say that despite the cordial and professional rapport between the Rikhirams and the Shankar family, this did not translate into the sphere of formal musical apprenticeship.

Professional Ties vs. Musical Pedigree

The Rikhiram family has been famed in manufacturing and repairing high-quality string instruments for decades. Pandit Ravi Shankar, like most other sitar masters, often used their services to fix or make their instruments. This engineering partnership is very recorded and it has moved across a generation.

But Anoushka Shankar suggested that it is intrinsically dissimilar to be a master craftsman or a reliable technician compared to being a musical disciple. In Indian music, a formal ceremony was required to become a shishya but not an admirer or an associate; this ceremony is called Ganda. Such a ritual represents the lifelong devotion between the student and the teacher.

Her father had never taken Rishabh through such a ceremony and had never given him the intensive, one-on-one musical training that would enable him to possess such a title, as Anoushka says. She highlighted that the term disciple is not a marketing word but a special title that a person attains after having taken years of hard training by a guru who closely monitors the trainee.

Protecting the Ravi Shankar Legacy

This is no personal issue, but one of historical correctness. The list of disciples compiled by Pandit Ravi Shankar is quite famous in the music world and features such names as Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, Kartick Seshadri, and Shubhendra Rao.

It is easy to add names to this list without checking, and this can cause confusion between the students and historians. Anoushka demonstrated her sense of respect towards the Rikhiram family in their contribution to the art of instrument making, but had to express herself when the story changed to a false musical origin. She observed that her father was quite selective about whom he represented as his students.

To have this relationship misrepresented, she said, is an injustice to those who, in fact, spent decades under the maestro. Another point that was brought to the fore by the sitarist was the fact that in the later years of his life, Ravi Shankar was very choosy with his time and energy. The belief that he had a new, primary disciple in his last years without the consent of his family or the laid-down basis is, in fact, wrong according to Anoushka.

Significance of the Guru-Shishya Tradition

The discussion has led to a wider debate of how contemporary musicians market themselves. The last disciple tag is a very effective career-building tool in the age of social media and the latest Bollywood news. It implies an immediate connection to a mythical source of knowledge, and frequently, it does not pass through the filter of the mainstream music community.

Anoushka Shankar is claiming the necessity of transparency by contradicting the arguments of Rishabh. She repeated that just because anyone can be inspired by the music of her father, and there has to be more than mere proximity or business connection to assert that there is a formal pedagogic relationship.
