Gmail Upgrades with Gemini AI Features and New Address Rules

Twenty years later, the most popular email service in the world is in the process of redesigning, which is forcing its users to rethink their approach to inbox management.

Google has officially entered Gmail into the Gemini era. This week, the company announced a plethora of changes to the two-billion users, introducing modern-day artificial intelligence into almost every aspect of the application. Though the update has enabled much-desired features, such as the capacity to change the email address, it is also the start of a permanent shift towards an AI-controlled inbox, which is not necessarily what everyone will want.

AI Assistant in Control

The most trending tech news today is the introduction of the so-called AI Inbox. Instead of giving a chronological list of messages as it used to initially, Gmail will now use Gemini 3 to summarize email threads, prioritize urgent messages, and suggest things to do.

There is a brand new functionality known as Catch Me Up, which is aimed at solving the problem of sifting through a bombarded inbox when one returns to work. It creates a bullet point overview of any important activity, such as the change in flight or a billing reminder, and in doing so, removes the time spent sifting through messages that are not read. Moreover, Google is implementing Help Me Write to all its users, which allows users to write full emails based on a simple prompt and can recreate the writing style of a particular person.

A Long-Awaited & Much-Desired Feature

This is the first change in the history of Gmail since 2004 when Google allowed its users to change their address to any other that ended with the @gmail.com address without losing any data. In the past, the need to have a more professional designation required opening a completely new account.

Users can now choose a new address and keep all the old photographs, Drive files, and emails. However, there is a significant drawback: the original speech is still present. It has been made to the account. The number of address changes per user is restricted to three in a lifetime, with a compulsory one-year gap between each change.

Features Hitting the Chopping Block

To support such smart features, Google has been eliminating many legacy tools. This month, Gmailify and the facility of accessing external mail on the shrinking POP3 protocol have been dropped.

This will have a negative impact on the longtime user who used Gmail as a central location to use both an Outlook or Yahoo account. Though the modern IMAP protocol can be used to connect accounts in mobile devices, the very old Check mail from other accounts option on desktops is being dropped.

Privacy and the “Opt-Out” Question

It is default-activated, which has raised concern as the update is not optional. Google claims that it does not use personal email content to train its publicly available AI models and that everything is processed behind a safe, so-called privacy barrier.

In case a person is not inclined to the AI integration, he/she can switch it off; this is not a simple switch. The process of turning off the new AI features requires switching off all of the so-called Smart Features, which also involve the loss of other basic conveniences like automatic inbox sorting and flight tracking. To Google’s two billion active Gmail users, the choice is now clear-cut; either use the AI assistant or go back to a much simpler and manual email experience.
