Ai safety

Elon Musk has also attracted an ethical crisis over his AI chatbot, Grok, after people found out that the tool is capable of digitally undressing people. In the last seven days, the X social media platform has flooded with AI-generated images of women, as well as minors, in bikinis or sexualized clothing.

The case started when the users started to play with the image-editing feature that was introduced by Grok. Users could change the photos of real people without their permission by simply tagging the bot and providing an instruction, like putting her in a bikini. The bot followed the command in many cases, which bypasses the safety filters that usually block such queries on the competitor systems, like ChatGPT or Gemini.

A Global Backlash

Governments are responding fast across the world. The Ministry of Information Technology of India has made a formal notice to X, which requires the latter to submit an Action Taken Report and delete all the obscene content at once. Failure to comply may make X lose immunity in the country.

In Europe, authorities have also been equally outspoken. One of the European Commission spokespeople called the situation appalling and illegal, and said that there is no place in the EU where such content would be welcomed. At the same time, the governments of the United Kingdom, France, and Malaysia are starting to conduct an investigation into whether the site is violating child safety and privacy laws.

Lapses in Safety

The most worrying aspect of the controversy is the imagery related to children. According to reports, Grok made sexualised images of girls as young as twelve. Even the mother of one of Musk’s children, who was Ashley St. Clair, even wrote horror online, saying that the tool had been used to undress childhood photographs of her.

Subsequently, Grok also made an apology, admitting to lapses in protection measures, which allowed the development of Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM). The bot argued that the company, xAI, that developed the tool, is also responding promptly to these vulnerabilities.

Musk’s Response

For much of the week, Elon Musk used a casual tone. Initially, he reacted to the trending posts with laughing emojis and even shared an AI-generated image of himself in a swimsuit. But when pressure from regulators intensified, he shifted to a more serious attitude.

Musk later warned that users who are manipulating the AI to create illegal content would face the same consequences as those who upload it manually. “We’re not kidding,” he posted, adding that accounts would be permanently suspended.

Experts argue that this incident hints at a major flaw in the hype for “uncensored” AI. While Musk introduced Grok as a more open alternative to its competitors in the market, critics say the lack of strict guardrails has turned a creative tool into a weapon for digital harassment. As the legal deadlines for X to respond approach, the controversy is likely to shape how AI safety is regulated in the years to come.
