Prime Video Targets Anime Dominance with Major Announcements
Latest Entertainment News: Amazon Prime Video has officially declared its desire to become the number one platform in the world in terms of anime. In one of the major events in London on 12 February 2026, the streaming platform described a plan that would ensure its establishment as a leading player in the global market for animated Japanese content. Some of the big announcements were made in the Prime Video Presents: International Originals showcase, such as exclusive rights to big franchises. This project is a clear competition to this particular established competitor, Crunchyroll.

Prime Video Vice President APAC /ANZ Gaurav Gandhi hosted the programme. In the speech, Gandhi formulated a very clear long-term vision and stated that the company aims to become the choice of anime content in the world. He noted that anime is currently experiencing explosive expansion in the international market and that since Prime Video already enjoys significant popularity as a leading anime platform in the Japanese market, the venture is in a good position to achieve the same outcome in the global market.
Reviving Cult Classics
The most important part of the announcement was the release of three major titles that will be released in 2026. These programmes will consist of a combination of legacy franchises that are treasured and modern popular series.
First, Prime Video stated that it has bought worldwide exclusive rights to a rejuvenation of Fist of the North Star: Hokuto No Ken, a series that commemorates the 40th anniversary of the initial manga. The reboot is a computer-generated imagery (CGI) in collaboration with hand-drawn animation by TMS Entertainment. The story is set in the post-apocalyptic world of a martial artist by the name Kenshiro in a search to find his lost fiancée. The original series is generally considered a classic in the genre, and this reboot is an attempt to make the saga known to a new generation of viewers.
The second major news was a new installment in the hierarchy of the franchise, Ghost in the Shell. It is a cyberpunk story that explores the complex nexus between man and machine. The interpretation is created by Science SARU, the studio known to work on such films as “Inu-Oh” and “Dandadan,” and is intended to be released in July 2026. The series will be available to stream on Prime Video globally, with exceptions in China and Russia; in Japan, the product will have a first-mover advantage. The acquisition is quite remarkable because, according to most critics, Ghost in the Shell is considered to be one of the most powerful pieces in the history of science fiction.
The second season of the series From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman is the third marquee title. The first season was a sudden hit with the site, being in the top ten most-watched shows in 45 countries. This is an indication that minor fantasy shows can work fairly well with big blockbusters.
A Strategic Shift Toward Asian Content
The event in London did not focus on animation specifically, which highlights a wider change in the content business of Amazon. The company is putting a lot of bet on the storytelling with its roots in the Asia-Pacific region. According to the event executives, Asian storytelling is no longer a niche matter but a key driver of streaming development across the globe.
Along with the anime announcements, Prime Video debuted some Korean shows and Indian originals. The audience was offered such titles as Human x Gukiho and Siren Kiss. This holistic strategy suggests that anime is considered by Amazon to be one of the pillars of a larger program called International Originals. With a diverse mix of content from Japan, Korea, and India, the site hopes to hold on to subscribers with culturally sensitive content that nevertheless has the ability to engage with everyone.
Gandhi claimed that the market in the region is enormous, and the initiatives of these nations usually become one of the most popular shows on Prime Video outside their country of origin. This fact has given the company the courage to invest strongly in exclusive rights and original productions. Also Read: Anoushka Shankar Disputes Rishabh Rikhiram’s Claims
